Sylvan America and Sylvan Europe’s marketing teams have turned to DesignDesign for over a decade of brand expansion and consistent marketing efforts in the mushroom industry. What began as monthly ad layout, has grown into a comprehensive approach to brand awareness built on technical and customer care initiative.
As one of the world’s top producers of high-quality mushroom spawn, Sylvan is up against two other key players in the market. In an effort to rise to the top, Sylvan has maintained strong brand integrity with messages of quality and authenticity, backed by on-site support.

One of the reasons Sylvan’s marketing is so successful is because it’s timely. As the market has needs or as Sylvan anticipates upcoming needs, Sylvan positions itself with preventative solutions for customers. Being a leader in the mushroom industry (Mushrooms are PA’s #1 cash crop) is a big deal, and staying on top is hard work.

In addition to timeliness, Sylvan has been strategic to tap into the failings of their competitors, reminding Sylvan customers that there are technological and performance platforms in place to ensure spawn quality and consistency (a promise Sylvan’s competitors are unable to make). In the end, the foundation for Sylvan’s quality stands in their deep-rooted understanding that being humble is just as vital to their sales as product integrity. The mushroom industry is agricultural. The product is fragile. One small problem can lead to loss (time, material, wages, the ability to deliver on contracts). But spawn is expensive. It’s important for Sylvan to remind customers that Sylvan doesn’t cut corners. It all comes down to the price each mushroom grower is willing to risk or pay.
